Course Overview

This 2-day course introduces non-traditional, technology-driven methods of creating moving image content, focusing on workflows that do not rely on conventional camera workflows.

AI is already being integrated into the tools many of us use daily—from colour grading in DaVinci Resolve to voice tools, sound editing, and automated workflows in post. This course offers a practical, human-centred guide to understanding how these systems work, where they’re headed, and how to direct them effectively. Through hands-on sessions with tools like Runway, Midjourney, ElevenLabs, Unreal Engine, and familiar industry software, you’ll develop adaptable pipelines designed for multiplatform delivery, creative consistency, and long-term relevance.

This course emphasises multi-channel making, iterative workflows, and story world thinking, offering you a chance to explore innovative paradigms that challenge traditional narratives. You’ll engage in interactive exercises, peer discussions, and practical projects that enable you to build a short moving image project. By the end of the workshop, you will have not only expanded your technical skills but also developed a critical understanding of the creative and ethical challenges inherent in using emerging technologies for storytelling. Join us and redefine the future of moving image production.

By the end of this course, participants will:

  1. Understand alternative methods of creating moving image content using creative technologies, multichannel making, iterative workflows, story world thinking, and asset-driven production.
  2. Engage with development tools such as game engines and generative AI models.
  3. Critically reflect on the ethical and creative challenges of using emerging technologies

Course Topics

  1. Introduction to Alternative Forms of Making for Moving Image: What are the alternative forms of making for moving image?
  2. Introduction to Game Engines for Virtual Storytelling: How are tools like Unreal Engine and Unity being used to create cinematic visuals?
  3. Leveraging AI for Storytelling and Visualisation: Using Generative AI models for asset creation, storyboarding, and visualisation
  4. From Collecting Assets to Creating Story Worlds: Understanding iterative, asset-driven workflows.
