The work that emerges from the relationship between writer and script editor can significantly enhance a script or TV proposal, guiding it through many development conversations and into production. A good script editor who understands the industry environment, the story, and the writer, can facilitate a compelling film/TV project.

In this one-day course, we explore:

The role of the script editor as part of the production team.
Interpreting the views of the producer, executive producer, commissioner and director, and supporting the writer in negotiating with these.
Strategies towards building a strong relationship with a writer, based on knowledge of opportunities and limitations, and trust.
Giving written as well as verbal feedback and dealing with notes.
Writing Script Reports: Getting to know the script inside out.
Writing programme summaries, episode outlines and character thumbnails.

Our initial exploration of key concepts leads us to practical exercises, which we will apply to industry workflows in order to hone your script editing skills. This will provide you with a range of techniques to work with screenwriters and producers and creates an opportunity to build your confidence in applying these practices.

Roger is a visiting lecturer for the LFS MA Screenwriting and MA Filmmaking.

He started his career as an actor, working extensively for companies such as the RSC, English Touring Theatre and the Traverse. He became a script editor in BBC Television Drama, went on to be Head of Drama Development at TalkBack Productions, then left to pursue his own writing and film-making, as well as continuing to work as a freelance script editor. He’s developing two feature projects, one an adaptation of his own novel The Lightman System (Wrecking Ball Press). He recently completed a trio of short films – Sunday, Grand Union and the as-yet-unreleased Darkling. The first two, along with other films and more information, can be found at www.rogerhyams.com.
