On 31st October, (haunted) Cinema B at the London Film School will transform into a chilling playground for sound in The sound of horror: Foley workshop and Halloween experience.
This unique event invites attendees to step into the terrifying world of horror sound design, where creaks, whispers, and sudden jolts that make audiences shiver come to life. Designed for both film enthusiasts and curious newcomers, the session offers a thrilling blend of immersive listening and hands-on learning, all set against the atmospheric backdrop of Halloween night.
The evening begins with a carefully curated sound experience that demonstrates the power of audio in horror cinema. Participants will be immersed in a darkened space where layers of sound, including footsteps, eerie winds, unsettling whispers, and bone-chilling effects, highlight how audio manipulates tension and fear. This workshop will celebrate the artistry of sound design, encouraging attendees to listen closely, strip away the visuals, and focus entirely on the terrifying possibilities that the ear can conjure in the imagination.
Following the rich experience, participants will explore the world of foley artistry. Guided by a professional foley artist, the group will learn about the tools and techniques used to create some of horror’s most iconic effects: snapping celery for broken bones, rustling fabric for unseen movements, and precisely timed props that mimic frightening encounters. Attendees will not only observe demonstrations but also have a go at making their own horror-inspired sounds, experimenting with everyday objects to reveal their sinister potential.
By the end of the experience, attendees will leave with a newfound appreciation for the craft, a sense of playful creativity, and perhaps a lingering shiver that follows them home into the Halloween night.
