Course Overview

This pitching and industry workshop introduces students to professional pitching standards used across film and television, focusing on how to clearly communicate a project’s creative and commercial potential. Through preparing loglines, synopses, visual materials, and timed pitches, students gain practical insight into how projects are presented to commissioners, funders, and producers focusing in particular on the British film industry. The session also contextualises these skills within current industry pathways, highlighting key funding opportunities, development programmes, and markets relevant to emerging filmmakers.

Course Details

This one-day workshop focuses on developing and delivering compelling pitches for feature films and television shows. Participants will explore what decision-makers are really listening for in a pitch, beyond plot and genre. The course breaks down the essential components of a strong pitch, including concept, tone, audience, and emotional hook. Participants will learn how to clearly communicate the core idea of their project in a concise and engaging way. A key element of the workshop is using visual thinking to strengthen pitches through the creation of made-up promotional posters. These fake posters will help participants clarify tone, genre, and world-building before speaking.

Course Content

The tutor will guide participants in using images as storytelling tools rather than decoration. Through examples of successful industry pitches, participants will analyse what makes ideas feel confident and “sellable.” Practical exercises will focus on structuring a pitch that feels natural rather than rehearsed. Participants will then present their projects using their posters as a visual anchor. The workshop concludes with feedback, refinement, and strategies for pitching with clarity and confidence in professional settings.
